Radiant Memories: Landscapes of the Heart
Sueim Koo’s solo exhibition, Radiant Memories: Landscapes of the Heart, presents recent works that explore memory, emotion, and self-reflection through the intimate visual language of collage.
Transforming personal memories into universal inner landscapes, Koo suggests that memory is not simply a fixed record of the past, but a living landscape—one that breathes, shifts, and evolves with time.
Within richly layered surfaces, warm sunlight filtering through a forest, the gentle movement of the Hudson River, and quiet white moonlight emerge as poetic traces of remembrance. The moon, a recurring motif throughout Koo’s work, becomes a symbol of emotional resilience—a light that remains even in life’s darkest moments, quieting the noise of the outside world and inviting us to look inward.
The materials accumulated layer upon layer across the canvas become both a tender farewell to time that has passed and a record of dreams that remain. Through these luminous landscapes, Koo reminds us that despite the continual passage and transformation of time, the pure joy and warmth held deep within us do not disappear.
In the midst of the relentless pace of contemporary life, Radiant Memories: Landscapes of the Heart offers a quiet place of refuge—an invitation to pause, reflect, and revisit our own memories with tenderness.
Artist Statement
In my artistic practice, I create abstract landscapes that explore the fluid nature of memory, emotion, and self-reflection. Rather than viewing memory as a static record of the past, I see it as a living entity that continually evolves. My work transforms personal recollections into universal inner landscapes—spiritual spaces that hold thoughts, longing, and reflection, unfolding through the interaction of color, composition, and form.
My process begins by building richly textured surfaces, followed by layering sunji (traditional Korean paper), painted paper, and fragments of magazines onto the canvas. Each piece of paper becomes part of my personal act of searching through memory, carrying gentle echoes of forgotten moments and unspoken dreams.
Forms and colors carry symbolic meanings throughout my work. Mountains represent the obstacles we encounter in life; green symbolizes hope, while yellow suggests impermanence. Poetic motifs such as the gentle ripples of the Hudson River and the enduring light of the white moon invite viewers into a deeper state of contemplation.
The white moon, in particular, serves as a central symbol of emotional resilience. It illuminates moments of darkness and quiets the noise of the world.
Ultimately, through these radiant landscapes, I hope to offer viewers a moment away from the complexities of everyday life—a space to pause, reflect, and reconnect with their own inner journeys.
